Answering to the question of Glenn Tiffert (TIFFERTG@ACFcluster.NYU.EDU), I made such kind of Appleshare connection between two PB100, one with system 7.0.1 (as server) and the other with system 6.0.7 (as user). The cable I used was an Stylewriter cable, and there was no difference compared when using Phonenet connectors. I guess you can use as well system 7.1 and Imagewriter cable. Jeff, - Remove the finder out of your Sys6 system folder, so the installer ahs to create a new System folder for 7.x - Start form your installtion disk no. 1 - Then copy all your extensions, fonts, etc. into your new system folder. In most cases this works. It depends also whether the version of the hard disk formatter/driver you have installed is working with System 7. If not you need to reformat the HD and install the new drivers. I personally recommend SilverLining. Any version greater than 5.31 works with Sys7, latest version is 5.42 as far as I know. I hesitated to mention a kludge solution to his problem, but seeing no good solutions mentioned by anyone I'll pass it on anyway. The recipe is: Open the PostScript file with Microsoft Word (either V4 or V5) Select the whole document Go to STYLE (in the Format menu in Word 5) Click on New Style, then enter the word PostScript in the style-name field, it is case sensitive Apply the style Word will inform you that this is a predefined style, and ask if you want to redefine it. Say no. Thats it, you can now have Word print the document. Since it is being queued by Word rather than either of the Apple laser utilities, Print Monitor is perfectly happy to let it print in the background. There is one caveat. This method loads the printer with both the Word Postscript Dict *and* whatever Dict is contained in the file you are printing. This can overwhelm the memory of minimum-memory printers. This problem can be minimized (but not eliminated) by resetting the printer prior to the print job to erase any downloaded fonts left by previous jobs. Good luck. I've heard of F-line calls but a-traps are a whole >new...alphabet to me! On the 68000 line of CPU's any Assembly instruction that begins with an A (eg A030) will cause an exception (kind of like f-line's only those deal with floating point instructions). But rather than dropping dead (meaning you get a bomb dialog box), it uses the rest of the instruction (the next 1 1/2 bytes roughly) to index into a jump table. Normally this jump table points to all of the standard apple functions to create a window, read from a file, draw the desktop. Well what an industrious programmer can do is change one of the values in this jump table so that instead of jumping to the standard apple function it jumps to his function instead. So when the CPU hits an a-trap (any instruction begining with an A, (A, a-trap pretty clever eh?)), that indexes to the trap he "patched" it calls his function, which then does what ever he wants it to. When he is done he can either return (which is what is most likely done in deskpict), or he can call the standard function (which was in the jump table to start with). In actuality there may be several inits which patch the same trap over and over, as long as they call the value they found in the jump table when they are done (or before they do anything), every thing will work fine. GetNextEvent is popular for many init's to patch because it is a way to get some CPU time on a regular basis. But in the case of such an patch you must call the original function, because you still want the standard functionality of GetNextEvent. Of course alot of the details are left out here. It really isn't quite as simple as all instructions that start with an A (there are different classes of a traps, called toolbox, and os traps), there are also selectors that can be set in the instruction, and so on. Also I have only periferally delt with A-traps so some of this might be a little wrong. if you want some more information, just let me know. I don't know if it can be downloaded, but I do know how to make the Racal InterLan MacConnect NuBus Ethernet card work under System 7.0 and 7.0.1. If anyone does find a legitimate source for the real thing, please let me know. Meanwhile, here's what works. 1. Install System 7 using the Customize feature to install the EtherTalk software even though the Mac doesn't think you have an Ethernet interface. 2. Run ResEdit on a copy of the System file. You'll see a resource type of DRVR. Open the DRVR resources. You should see a DRVR resource with a number of 127 and a name of Driver: ".ENET". This resource will be rather small compared to the Racal Interlan driver, I think its size is about 138 (bytes?). 3. Open another file in ResEdit: the System file on your System 6 Racal Interlan installer disk. Open the DRVR resources, select the (much larger) DRVR resource 127, and copy it. 4. Select the DRVR window for the copy of your hard disk's System file. 5. Paste the bigger DRVR 127 into the window, clicking "Yes" when ResEdit asks if you want to replace the identically numbered resource. 6. Save the edited System. 7. Remove the original System file from your System folder (don't trash it quite yet) and place the edited System file in the System folder. Name it System if it isn't already so named. 8. Restart your Mac. If everything worked OK, you should now be able to select the EtherTalk driver in the Network control panel. 9. Sometimes this doesn't work right. I haven't quite figured out why, but what happens is that you get what looks like a modal dialog box that just flickers on your screen and you have to cycle power or hit the reset switch to get your Mac back. If this happens, restart with a floppy and put the original System back in the System folder. This just happened on a co-worker's Mac IIfx, and I finally got a clean install by using the Network Products Installer 1.3 disk, available from ftp.apple.com, to install EtherTalk in step 1 above instead of the regular System 7 installer. Note that once you get it working, it seems to work just fine, and hasn't broken for me in a year of running System 7. But without any other system extension than QT 1.5 and both with and without virtual memeory support, I get only the answer "Program aborted, system fault number 90 (not correctly translated >From German)" when I try to load my pict files. I tried picts from Photoshop 2.01 as grey-scale or as bitmap, 1Bit, 8 Bit, and 8 Bit System color scale. Only the 8 Bit System color scale with 15 and 17 KB could be loaded (only with virtual memory of + 6 MB and 4 MB for the Metamorphisis program). But when I choosed a few pionts and "Do Meta...." from the Menu, I got the same system fault. I forgot to say that I have only a 12" greyscale-monitor. Please mail to me directy, when there will be a few interesting messages, I will post them to info-mac. Trojan Horses, by definition don't. Worms, by definition, replicate themselves, not attaching to other programs. If you would have known this you would not have said what you did. Thus Trojan Horses do NOT spread very far since they tend to kill themselves off. So, aside from mentioning it, most people have little to worry. This is why I do not go through the expense of postcard notification (on the order of $1,500) for Trojan Horses. FYI, Disinfectant doesn't catch ANY Trojan Horses for the same reason: they don't spread themselves. If a Trojan *implants* a virus then that is another story and it treated like a virus (witness MBDF). I guess you never have taken a look at VD since the search strings for what it detects are plainly visible. VD has always detected all the viruses and Trojan Horses (no worms yet) that could attack a Mac and has been doing this since 1985. Do note that the ONLY change in my policy is that registered users now get notified directly (if desired) instead of publically. My policy for Trojan Horses has ALWAYS been the same: electronic notification only. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Jan 93 13:07:05 EST From: Randy Patton Subject: Opening PageMaker 2 files in 4.2 I have a colleague who has recently upgraded to version 4.2 of Aldus Pagemaker. Any ideas on how much such a system would cost for a service > bureau to set up? Thanks, Pete Tamas This isn't quite correct. You can send your undeveloped film or negatives to a Photo CD processing center for scanning and placement on to a CD. Right now, there are only 13 or 14 places in the country that do Photo CD processing. Call Kodak at 1-800-242-2424, ext 36 to find the the lab nearest you that has a PhotoCD system. You get back on your CD 5 copies of each photo at different resolutions: Size (pixels) Wallet 128 x 192 Snapshot 256 x 384 Standard 512 x 768 Large 1024 x 1536 Poster 2048 x 3072 Costs for the transfers are obscenely cheap. If you send them undeveloped film, each scan will cost anywhere for $ .75 to $1.00. Sending them negs is a little more expensive; the scans cost anywhere from $1.50 to $2.00. The magzine I work for has just recently gone all digital with our pre-press. We scan all black and white photos in-house and send out all color photos to our service bureau for scanning on a Linotype-Hell drum scanner. They send us back low res TIFFs of the color scans for placement. We send them the entire magazine (Quark X-Press document) on an optical disk. They print it directly to negatives (4 up) on a Lintotronic 530. All color separations are done on a Linotronic color workstation using proprietary separation software. As soon as we get our CD-Rom drive (the end of this month) we're going to experiment with using Photo CD for our editorial color photos. Our covers will still have to be scanned at the bureau, as we get them as large format transparencies from our photographer in Nashville. Kodak claims that they'll be able to do large format negs and transparencies sometime in '93 though. Right now you're limited to 35mm slides or negs. If anyone is interested, I can post the results of our experiments. The symptom: excessive paging, opening the add on manager takes about 5 minutes (!!). It seems like Excel does not like fonts that are not installed in the system file. I tried putting lots of fonts into the system file, and Excel runs normally. Once the number of fonts opened using Suitcase exceeds 20 or so families, the performance degrades rapidly. (I divided the fonts into three suitcases, with about 20 families in the first suitcase). I haven't tried checking with Tech support. Figured that the VM + suitcase configuration isn't really a common setup, and previous posting on the net resulted in about two people reporting similar symptoms. I guess now that Sys. 7.1 puts all the fonts in external suitcases, this'll be a real issue. There is definitely something wrong with the way Excel handle large number of fonts. The question is what's the problem, and when will Microsoft fix it? t.c. #I speak for myself, obviously :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jan 93 06:27:25+080 From: smoliar@iss.nus.sg (Stephen Smoliar) Subject: System 7.1 Compatibility Revisited Charles J.
